Dual citizenship – for all children who acquired Lithuanian citizenship by birth

Effective January 1, 2021, amendments to the Citizenship Law of the Republic of Lithuania come into force.

According to these amendments, all children under the age of 18 who acquired Lithuanian citizenship by birth will have the right to dual citizenship – to be citizens of both the Republic of Lithuania and another state – regardless of when they acquired citizenship of another state – whether at birth or later, until they reach the age of 18. “The implementation of this law will allow Lithuanian citizens to decide for themselves which citizenship they want to hold. This issue remains relevant when parents leave Lithuania. We have many examples where young people who have grown up in other countries want to return and regain citizenship of our state,” says Minister of Internal Affairs Agnė Bilotaitė.

Until now, only those children who acquired dual citizenship – Lithuanian and that of another state – at birth had the right to dual citizenship.

Information about acquiring citizenship of another state must be reported to the Migration Department or the diplomatic mission or consular office of the Republic of Lithuania within 2 months. We invite you to do this through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS).

Those who acquire dual citizenship before the age of 18 will retain it even after reaching adulthood. If children who acquired Lithuanian citizenship at birth later lose it, they will be able to regain Lithuanian citizenship by completing an application through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS).
