In 2020, the number of foreigners who settled in Lithuania increased by 18 percent.
The Migration Department announces the key migration indicators for the second half of 2020.
As of January 1, 2021, the number of foreigners residing in the Republic of Lithuania reached 87,269, accounting for 3.12% of the total population of Lithuania. In the previous year, at the same time, the number of foreigners living in Lithuania was recorded at 73,751, constituting 2.64% of the total population of Lithuania.
The majority of foreigners in 2020 were citizens of third countries, among whom 61,349 resided in Lithuania with temporary residence permits, and 17,796 with permanent residence permits. The remaining portion consisted of citizens of EU member states and their family members, who settled in Lithuania less than in previous years. Over the year (from 2020-01-01 to 2021-01-01), the number of EU citizens decreased by 7.0% (from 8,734 to 8,124 individuals), while the number of third-country citizens increased by 21.7% (from 65,017 to 79,145 individuals).
With the Migration Department expediting the processing of applications for Lithuanian citizenship, during the second half of 2020, the number of individuals granted Lithuanian citizenship increased by 2.2 times, from 1,078 to 2,367.
